ryslig, which means the differences from canon have become pretty significant. The premise of Ryslig is that player characters, after arrival, gradually turn into monsters that have to feed on native humans in order to keep their sanity. The longer they put this off (which is common) the more uncontrollable and violent their urges become until they lose their minds entirely, so there is truly no escaping the situation they've been forced into. Katsuya was in the game for nearly a year, meaning his physical transformation is complete (more on that in the powers section) and he's had to grapple with the moral quandary of enforced cannibalism for quite a while now; having been a dedicated police officer in his previous life, he very much struggled with the idea of having to kill and eat other people and exhausted pretty much every alternative he could think of to no avail. By the end he had (more or less) come to terms with the idea that the cannibalism is truly unavoidable and that his best option is to instead go about it as "ethically" as possible--the recently and incidentally dead only if he can manage it, and if he really has to kill his victims himself, then he'll target the scum of the earth first.
As a result of all of this, as well as not having served as a police officer for a long time by now, his tolerance of lesser crimes has become significantly more relaxed. After all, he's literally eaten people. Who is he to judge anybody?
Also he started smoking again. Scandalous.
Personality: Katsuya Suou is the picture of the promising young up-and-coming police officer: dedicated, courteous, honest, acceptably competent, metrosexual. He's also terminally socially awkward and about one fraternal underage arrest record away from a nervous breakdown, but, you know, details.
In truth, Katsuya had always wanted to be a dessert chef (excuse me, "patissier"), but became a cop instead when his father, also a policeman, was framed and wrongfully incarcerated when Katsuya was in high school; Katsuya joined the force himself in order to try and clear his name. As their mother is apparently a nonentity, it also fell to Katsuya to support his little brother Tatsuya (their parents were evidently not very creative).
The brothers developed a strained relationship in the years that followed, despite Katsuya's best efforts to keep the family together: as a result of what happened to their father, whom he apparently idolized, Tatsuya became a delinquent, skipping school and buying a motorcycle, shock and horror. He comes to see Katsuya as distant, authoritarian, and obsessed with his job, and resists all of Katsuya's attempts to reign him in. In reality, Katsuya is only so overbearing because he worries about Tatsuya constantly, arguably to excess, and even puts aside a sizable portion of his paycheck to support Tatsuya after he graduates. The more Tatsuya rebels, the more Katsuya tries to keep a lock on him so that he doesn't destroy his future, and the more Tatsuya rebels, resulting in a positive feedback loop of ridiculous family drama. What they've got there is a failure to communicate.
The confrontation with his shadow toward the end of the game, however, reveals that he does resent Tatsuya to some degree for how much he's had to give up for Tatsuya's benefit and how Tatsuya doesn't seem to appreciate it. Ultimately, though, it's presented as a natural result of the friction in their relationship, and only a small part of the way Katsuya feels about his brother, whom he remains devoted to. And, after the day is saved, they already seem to be getting along better, proving that whatever issue they might have with each other is only temporary. Brotherly love wins out. Awww. Not that that matters, since I'll be pulling Katsuya from midgame!
Anyway: as his career goes, Katsuya is one of the most honest and committed cops in the Konan police department, constantly coming into conflict with his more morally questionable captain Shimazu. When he's (understandably) taken off the JOKER case for writing about demons and a bunch of other weird crap in his reports, he continues to investigate it independently with Maya and Ulala simply because there's obviously something supernatural going on and they're the only ones who can do something about it, and he can't just sit by and watch the Joker run loose in good conscience. He doesn't hesitate to help in bringing down Shimazu when it unsurprisingly turns out he is corrupt as hell. In addition he frequently comes into conflict with Definitely A Criminal Party Member Baofu, proving that his moral principles extend beyond his job, but is also capable of (mostly) putting that aside in favor of working together to figure out just what the heck is going on with Persona 2's plot. He does tend to go a little too far in the other direction as well and threatens to arrest demons for existing like they care, but hey, you can't win 'em all.
What really makes him endearing, though, is that on top of all this he is a gigantic dweeb. He dresses sharp and is very polite, which is presumably what makes him popular with his female coworkers, but he's hopeless when it comes to romance--he develops a huge obvious crush on Maya but still insists on calling her "Ms. Amano" until the end of the game, and can only stammer and blush whenever anything concerning his feelings comes up. According to gossip you can overhear in the police station he once responded to a coworker giving him cake on Valentine's Day by giving her tips on how to improve the flavor and apparently had no idea why she was giving him cake in the first place. (He is very passionate about baking.) He is also a huge cat person despite being allergic. His starting Persona is even a cat. He is basically like if the sweet housewife that lives next door who is always making you cupcakes was also Horatio Caine.
For some reason, he also knows how to play flamenco guitar.
Integration Questions
how will your character handle being assigned a leadership role: It absolutely depends on the kind of leadership; Katsuya struggles without some kind of structure, so he'll flounder in any role where he has to make the rules himself and will probably get caught up in trying to make everyone as happy as possible, regardless of how much sense it makes. Enforcing rules that already exist, however, he can and will do with gusto--within reason, anyway, as he's more Good than Lawful and will refuse to do anything he deems unjust.
how will your character handle being assigned an antagonist role: Related to the above: extremely badly. He's literally associated with the major arcana of Justice. He became a police officer to do right by people, and he believes in that very strongly even though he hasn't actually been one in several months. He is also EXTREMELY stubborn and reckless with his own safety when it comes to protecting others, so he would absolutely prefer being punished himself to directly causing any harm. He'd do terribly as a villain so naturally I want to play him having to be one very badly.
how will your character handle the implication that they’re not real / are a clone: He'd probably do surprisingly well, considering? He takes the sudden existence of demons on the chin without bothering to ponder the metaphysical implications of other worlds and supernatural powers beyond wondering if he can apply the penal code to, like, literal eldritch abominations. He's very much a guy that will shrug off information that is irrelevant to whatever he's trying to accomplish in the moment. Plus dwelling on it would make him uncomfortable and he already has plenty of anxiety that he's pretending doesn't actually exist, so nothing new there.

Powers
Powers / Enhancements: Katsuya turned into a gargoyle while in Ryslig, which per Ryslig lore basically means he's a humanoid dragon-monster with a whole bunch of bells and whistles. Changes include:
- Urge to eat people! Big one! Ryslig monsters can go a month before they start feeling the hunger and will go nuts by two months without eating.
- Scales everywhere. Wings capable of flight. Claws. Fangs. Big tail. Giant fuck-off dinosaur feet. Pic here.
- Fire breath and general fire conjuration.
- Enhanced sight. Boy's no longer nearsighted!
- He turns into a statue made of red stone when he goes into the sun; he can only be outside at night.
Nerf Details: He essentially becomes human, but with a few dragon-y traits because I feel like being a special snowflake. These would be:
- A dusting of scales in places like at the back of his jaw to the top of his neck, his shoulderblade area, his collarbone.
- His eyes are still lizardlike and retain his enhanced sight.
- Small claws at his fingertips, easily hidden by gloves.
- Extremely basic small fire magic, like... he can light a cigarette without a lighter. Ooooooh.
- Still has small fangs. Still gotta eat that meat!
- He still feels hunger, but it's slowed by a factor of two--mostly so that if he really needs to he can go a full four months without eating, in case it would mess up the setting. It will take a serious toll on him mentally, though.
- Sunlight sensitivity--staying in the sun too long will be very uncomfortable in an inexplicable way, but he won't turn into a statue or anything.
